Its art and music academies are among the largest in the country and there are four renowned hospitals here. The town grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution, developing important textile and brick industries.Įconomically the town is the commercial, industrial and transportation centre of the Waas region. The town's arms were granted in 1819 and confirmed on March 27, 1840. The geographer Gerardus Mercator was born nearby in 1512. In 1241 it was granted independence by the Counts of Flanders, and was chartered in 1513. It developed from the resting place used by travellers on their journey between the cities of Ghent and Antwerp, boasting the biggest market place in Europe. Sint-Niklass is the former capital of the Waasland region. Other events include the Walburg concerts, Flanders volley gala and the cyclocross at De Ster.

There are also two series of concerts and activities: Summer in Town, and Winter in Town. Sinterklaas (Dutch: sntrklas) or Sint-Nicolaas (Dutch: snt nikolas ()) is a legendary figure based on Saint Nicholas, patron saint of children. Many events and activities take place here throughout the year, including the annual Peace Festivities on the market place, and an international balloon meeting which takes place on the first weekend of September.
The large Waasland Shopping Centre is located just outside the city centre. Of the many shopping streets the Stationstraat, which connects the market place to the station, is by far the most popular. On the outskirts of the town is De Ster, a large recreation park with big playgrounds for the children. There is a theatre, new cinema complex, many restaurants and several museums, including the Mercator Museum, devoted to one of the most famous map makers in history. St Niklaas is situated on the main E17 motorway between Ghent and Antwerp. Administratively, it is within the East Flanders Province of Flanders which covers approximately 13,522 sq kms.
